KYB (Know Your Business)
Verifying a business entity itself - its registration, legal status, and who is authorised to act for it - before or during a commercial relationship. Read more →
KYC (Know Your Customer)
Verifying an individual person's identity. A distinct check from KYB, often run alongside it, but answering a different question - who a person is, not what a business is. Read more →
UBO verification
A point-in-time check: confirming who a company's ultimate beneficial owners are, as of today, using currently available register data. Read more →
UBO monitoring
An ongoing check: re-verifying that beneficial ownership hasn't changed since it was last confirmed, rather than checking once and assuming it holds. Read more →
Perpetual KYB
KYB re-run continuously rather than only at onboarding - the umbrella term covering both UBO monitoring and non-ownership signals (status, filings, register access changes) together. Read more →
Registry monitoring
Watching one specific official register for filings or status changes. Narrower than perpetual KYB, which also covers ownership-structure changes a single register filing might not directly announce. Read more →
Beneficial ownership
The natural person(s) who ultimately own or control a company, as distinct from whoever is named as a shareholder of record - the two coincide when ownership is direct and simple, and diverge as soon as a holding company, nominee, or trust sits in between. Read more →
UBO (Ultimate Beneficial Owner)
A natural person who meets or exceeds the applicable ownership or control threshold once every intermediate holding company in the chain has been resolved back to a person. Read more →
Ownership resolution
The process of walking a company's shareholding graph downward, multiplying effective percentage along each verified path, until it either reaches a natural person or hits a defined stopping condition. Read more →
AML (Anti-Money Laundering)
The regulatory framework requiring obliged entities - banks, payment firms, crypto asset service providers and others - to identify who they're really dealing with, including a customer's ultimate beneficial owners. Read more →
CDD (Customer Due Diligence)
The standard-level identity and ownership checks AML rules require before or during a business relationship - confirming who a customer is and, for a company, who owns or controls it. Read more →
EDD (Enhanced Due Diligence)
A deeper level of CDD applied to higher-risk customers or relationships - closer scrutiny of ownership structure, source of funds, and ongoing monitoring, rather than a one-off check. Read more →
The 25% ownership threshold
The EU's AMLR (Regulation (EU) 2024/1624) sets the general beneficial-ownership test at 25% or more of shares, voting rights, or equivalent control - exactly 25% qualifies, which the older AMLD5 wording did not. Read more →
Filed percentage
An exact ownership percentage a register has actually published for a holding - the only kind of edge in an ownership chain that contributes a real, summable number rather than an upper-bound estimate. Read more →
Fiduciary / nominee ownership
A holding registered in the name of a fiduciary or nominee rather than the person who actually controls it. A chain that terminates here is a genuine gap, not a resolved answer - the register itself doesn't name the real owner. Read more →
LEI (Legal Entity Identifier)
A 20-character global identifier issued under the ISO 17442 standard and maintained by GLEIF, used to unambiguously identify a legal entity across systems and jurisdictions. Read more →
